Home Based Business Success - The Five Keys
Tuesday, April 8th, 20081. Determine your “Why”. There are many roadblocks you may encounter while trying to build your home based business. Having a strong reason to succeed is necessary to keep you going when things get tough. This is your inspiration, your motivation, your reason for having a home based business. When you feel like quitting, your “why” has to give you the strength to keep going. Your “why” might be to keep the kids out of day care or provide a more stable future, but the important thing is that it provokes a strong emotion in you.
2. Set up your office. Having a designated office area will help you feel more professional and enable you to get to business when you enter it. One of the challenges of being a home business entrepreneur is separating home and work responsibilities. If you are working on your computer in the kitchen, it is all too easy to get sidetracked by a sink full of dirty dishes. Having a separate office allows you to “go to work” and be more productive.
3. Create a realistic schedule. It is a great privilege to be able to set your own hours, but that often includes the temptation to work on a scattered schedule and try to fit your work in when you aren’t busy doing something else. Since the reality is that we always have too much to do, this idea usually leads to failure. You can choose to work your home based business full time or part time, but you cannot work it some time.
4. Continue to educate yourself. Being a successful home business entrepreneur means always being at the top of your industry. It is vital to be thoroughly educated on all aspects of your industry, products or services and to consistently review positive motivational materials. Consider positive books, cd’s and seminars the fuel you need to keep yourself motivated and moving forward in your business. Your tank needs to be refilled on a regular basis.
5. Have faith in yourself. Sometimes this can be the greatest challenge of all. You need to believe that you can run a successful work from home business and teach others how to succeed with the business opportunity as well. Your belief in yourself needs to be strong enough to overcome the negative influences of the world around you. When all of your family members and friends fail to believe in you, you have to keep believing in yourself. The world around you is going to try to wear you down. In his book The Slight Edge, Jeff Olsen explains that everyone wants to have the tallest building in town. He goes on that it is easier for them to try to tear your building (success) down than to try to build a taller building of their own and that is why people tend to more negative when you try to succeed.
These simple, but important keys have helped countless home business entrepreneurs succeed. If you follow them closely and take the time to review them and check yourself from time to time, they will help you succeed with your home based business as well.
